Caring for Your Jewelry

If you received a piece of jewelry over the past month or so, you may be wondering how you can keep it nice and shiny for years to come. Basic jewelry care, before it becomes dirty and, simple cleaning can help you keep your beautiful jewelry bright for a lifetime.

Always - Before performing even the simplest task, remove your jewelry. This includes rings, bracelets, and other trinkets that might catch on something as you move your hands and arms.

Removing your gems will also keep them free of harmful chemicals that can stain or physically damage parts of the jewelry. This is especially true for custom jewelry engraving on various pieces because the chemicals can fill in the wording and sometimes erodes the delicate etching.

Do not wear your jewelry in the shower, swimming pool, or hot tub. Soap film or chemicals build upon the jewels and cause them to look dull. This can also damage the stones.

Cleaning - Do not use paper towels or tissues when jewelry cleaning as they scratch and can embed small fibers near the findings.
For the best results, use a jewelry polishing cloth. An old cloth diaper or svelte could also be used; however, the polishing cloths are the best bet.

The staff at Draper Jewelry can assist you in making the best choice for everyone on your list. This Nashville jewelry offers custom jewelry engraving to turn any piece of jewelry from beautiful to inspire.

Appropriate Jewelry Gift Guide

When it comes to gift giving, teenagers, and men are typically the hardest to shop for. Almost all women will accept jewelry as a holiday or anytime gift. Draper Jewelry has a large selection of beautiful pieces that will be welcomed with a big smile for everyone on your list.

Jewelry Gifts for Women
The hardest part of purchasing woman jewelry is deciding what she wants most. Earrings, bracelets, and rings are always a safe bet, but choose carefully. The age of the woman is most important when deciding which shiny jewels she would like.

Stay away from fine diamond engagement rings, unless you are planning to ask for her hand in marriage. Countless other diamond ring options say everything from love to friendship. In addition, beautiful, colorful gems say the same thing with a pop of color.
Even if your mom loves diamond rings, make sure it does not look like an engagement ring. Better yet, stick with a bracelet or a delicate necklace.

Jewelry Gifts for Men
Men are simple creatures when it comes to jewelry. They prefer something understated, not flashy or gaudy. Watches are always a crowd pleaser for the man in your life. Young men also enjoy a nice watch, just make sure it's his style and not too old for his age.

Jewelry Gifts for Teens
Like with the other categories of jewelry gifts, be sure your jewelry choice is age appropriate. No teenage girl wants to explain to her friends that the diamond engagement ring is actually a gift from her father. The same could be said for heart charms. Of course, you love your little girl, but show her in a fatherly way, nothing romantic.

The staff at Draper Jewelry can assist you in making the best choice for everyone on your list. This Nashville jewelry offers custom jewelry engraving to turn any piece of jewelry from beautiful to inspire.

Jewelry Cleaning and Care Guide

Your jewelry is an important part of your life and you want to keep the pieces bright, shiny and in the best shape possible. Jewelry cleaning can help keep your accessories looking great for as long as you own them.

Here is a list of general care guidelines for your beautiful jewelry.

Storage - keep your jewelry in a cool, dry place such as a jewelry box. Do not store items in a drawer without dividers. Beware of different pieces of jewelry, they can harm other pieces by rubbing together or become tangled with each other. Use individual boxes and wrap each piece with a soft cloth or tissue paper if not using a fabric-lined jewelry box.

Chemicals - general cleaning products, especially chlorine bleach, can discolor and damage gems and mounting pieces. Always remove your rings and other jewelry before house cleaning.

Removal - take extra precautions when removing rings and bracelets. Do not leave them on top of the sink when you are washing dishes or your hands. Small pieces can fall into the sink and be difficult to retrieve.

Professional cleaners - when cleaning your jewelry at home, use a professional cleaner and a mild detergent or ammonia and water. After dipping the jewelry in the cleaner, use a soft cloth or Q-tip to remove dust and dirt particles. Then allow time for drying before wearing.

Be sure to visit your jeweler every six months for deep cleaning of your jewelry. They will also be able to detect any loose fittings or gems.

Holiday Ring Giving Guide

Since Halloween is around the corner, that means the holiday season, and fine diamond engagement rings surprises, is upon us once again. The singer Eartha Kitt said it best in her song Santa Baby, "…forgot to mention one little thing, a ring."

Nearly every young person's secret, and sometimes not so secret, dream is to have a surprise-wedding proposal. Moreover, the one doing the proposal is also looking for a new idea for the ultimate proposal. Here are a few holiday jewelry gift-giving thoughts from Drapers Jewelry.

Halloween – This is probably the most creative holiday for wedding proposals. Whatever your love loves, you can dress as or recreate the fiction or real life story they have been talking about.

Possible costumes include a giant present box. Cut out a hole for your arms and head, leaving the bottom part of the box open. Add a large bow to a hat and voilà, you are the present; tie the ring around your neck or add to the bow.

Thanksgiving – What better opportunity to impress your loved one's friends and family will you have than Thanksgiving. Hiding the ring in a bouquet of assorted fall flowers is always a nice touch. Just keep hidden jewelry out of all food products!

Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza – You see many diamond engagement rings gifted at these large celebrations. Most recipients a ring are on to the gag after opening the third or fourth box in a sequence of smaller and smaller gift boxes. Think of something unusual to give your loved one, which could also hide a ring. Cut a hole out of the inside of a book, hide the ring in a potted plant, or if you are ready, tie the ring to a new puppy!

New Year's Eve – There are many choices for a proposal on the eve of a new beginning. Add a ring to a balloon filled with confetti, hand your love a baseball glove and ask her to catch the shiny paper, and of course, the ring!

This Nashville jewelry offers custom jewelry engraving to turn a simple ring into something

Oh, Baby!

An appreciation for beautiful, high quality jewelry begins at an early age. It is perfectly acceptable for babies to have their ears pierced in the first few months of life. Drapers Jewelry, a Nashville jewelry store, has everything a parent would want for their baby's first set of earrings, bracelets, delicate chains, and charms.

Choosing the correct earrings - Tiny diamond or gold studs are a great beginning jewelry set for all ages of babies and young children. Sized to be proportionate to the baby's size, the earrings can come in several different styles. Naturally, there are styles of earrings that adults would wear, but they pose a danger for babies. Hooped earrings could have a baby getting their small fingers caught in the loops. This can lead to damage to the earlobes and make wearing, pierced earrings difficult in the future. There are also special "locking" backings for infant and children's earrings. This makes it difficult for the child to pull off the back and place either piece in their mouth.

Choosing the correct rings - Infant and children's rings are a way to show your child how much they mean to you. It is not only a piece of jewelry; it's a memento they will keep close to their heart for their entire life.

Baby rings are not limited to birthstone rings. A birthstone ring is nice, but there are several other options. The most popular ring for an infant is yellow gold in 10 karats. Additional metals like white gold, sterling silver, and 14K yellow gold. The designs are seemingly endless and you may ask for custom jewelry engraving for your child's new ring with limited lettering.

Choosing the correct bracelet - An infant or child's bracelet is another special gift a parent can give to their child for a lasting memory of love. The best bracelets for the younger crowd are one with a clasp. Bracelets that slip on and off will do just that, slip off and become lost. Custom jewelry engraving for a small bracelet is also available.

Watch Your Timepiece

Since the invention of cell phones, many believe the watch is outdated. However, those who want to make a statement with their accessories, and not by pulling out a cell phone, wear watches proudly. Drapers Jewelry, a Nashville jewelry store, has all the latest watches, in styles and colors that will accent all your styles.

A watch is much more than a timepiece. Every watch makes a statement about who you are, what you believe, and how you value your time.  From large bangle style bracelets with a watch imbedded on the curve, to traditional timepieces, Drapers Jewelry has the right watch for you. This Nashville jewelry store offers custom jewelry engraving. Unless you are a creative crafter, personalizing your cell phone is tricky.

Think about this, a high quality watch is a piece of jewelry you'll want to pass on to your son or daughter, you won't want to pass on your cell phone. A child would cherish something like your old watch much more than your old phone, which has no value and is going to be obsolete no matter how new it is.

If your old watch isn't working, Drapers Jewelry is a watch repair specialist. Old or new, repairing a watch takes skilled hands, experience, and knowledge. You want to pass down a working watch to your children, or like an old cell phone, they won't appreciate it.

Another reason to pass down a cherished watch to your children is you are able to personalize the item. Drapers Jewelry can engrave any sentiment of love and caring on your old watch before you gift it.

Top Three Jewelry Gifts for a New Girlfriend

A new relationship can be sweet, exciting, and a little scary when a special occasion rolls around. If your new girlfriend enjoys jewelry, and what girl doesn't, here are three jewelry picks to give her more reasons to love you.

A word of warning, avoid rings. They send the wrong message, even if unintended, early in a relationship. It is a good idea to choose fine diamond engagement rings later in the relationship.

1.   Earrings - Most women have their ears pierced and a gift of earrings is a loving gesture. If you don't know her very well, keep it simple and small. Stay away from large dangling or weirdly shaped animals until you know her style better. Pearls or small diamond studs are a great jewelry gift idea.

2.   Watches - Women consider watches as jewelry. Many women have more than one watch to fit her moods and outfits. A gift of a new watch says a lot about your commitment to this new relationship. If you feel as if this will be a long-lasting relationship, spend a little more money. If you don't think this relationship is going anywhere or you are unsure, choose a watch in the "middle" price range.

3.   Bracelets - A gift of a bracelet may not seem like much, but to a new girlfriend, it may mean the world. Choose a bracelet that is versatile, not too fancy, and not too plain.

Choosing the Right Engagement Ring

Today, the bigger, the more elaborate, and the more outrageous wedding proposals are all a partner may want. However, before you can plan this part of your new life, the invitation, you need to shop for an engagement ring.

Fine diamond engagement rings from Drapers Jewelry are a great place to start a ring search. There are several things to keep in mind when picking out a ring your partner will wear and cherish the rest of their lives.

The number one mistake engagement ring shoppers forget is the person they are purchasing the item for. Some tend to choose something they like instead. Keep your future partner in mind at all times during this buying process.

Before a major purchase such as an engagement ring, consult a Nashville jewelry store for ideas on style, type, and price. Experienced and certified jewelers will help guide you to the engagement ring your future spouse will love, today and forever Drapers Jewelry also provides custom jewelry engraving. This may be helpful if you are proposing with an older piece, like your great-grandmother's ring. Engraving a ring or other piece of jewelry makes it special and creates something unique.

Perhaps your future significant other is not into fancy jewels. Smaller, less bright choices are also available from Drapers Jewelry. Gold, silver, pewter, and other mixed metals are available in simple bands. Also, there is no rule that says an engagement ring needs to be a diamond. Bold, bright, and beautiful stones are available as engagement rings. It all depends on your partners' style and preference.

How to Wear Bold and Beautiful Jewelry

Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but they have a limited color palette. Today, women walking along the red carpet, and women around the conference table, are choosing big, bold, and beautiful pieces of jewelry. This trend helps women accentuate different parts of their body as well as bring color to an otherwise drab outfit. And a little goes a long way.

Drapers, a Nashville jewelry store, offer various statement pieces to help your outfit to pop. Statement jewelry doesn't necessarily have an actual statement engraved on the face of it. These pieces are bigger than traditional jewelry items. The statement is "less is more," which makes these gems great for the office or date night.
Here are three rules to follow when pairing statement jewelry with work or date night clothing.

Keep it Simple - Bold, colorful jewelry is best with a simple outfit. Keep from pairing your statement jewelry with big prints as they may clash. A small floral or geometrical shape pattern on a simple dress will help highlight this type of jewelry.

Less is More - Don't combine large, bold pieces with lots of other jewelry pieces. A statement piece is a "stand alone" style accessory. You can pair a large necklace with a bold ring or bracelet, but not with big earrings. The same goes for a ring and bracelet; your finger and arm is too close together. Wearing too much in one place will take attention away from one or the other piece.

Create a Look - Statement jewelry, if worn properly, will allow you to create the perfect look. Vintage jewelry, such as a dark rose ring, a thin small pink bracelet, and large flowers around the neck, help you look feminine and pull the outfit together.

Caring for Your Fine Jewelry in Summer

Summer-Jewelry-for-Women.jpg
Summer is filled with activity, between the beach, vacations, bbqs, and festivals it seems like you’re constantly on the go. And nothing sets off your fine gold, silver, and rose gold favorites from Draper Jewelry like tanned glowing skin. Of course, summer can be especially hard on fine jewelry, so you’ll want to be wise in considering just how to protect your jewelry, so you can continue to enjoy it for many seasons to come. Here is a list of 5 tips to help you care for your fine jewelry this summer.

1. Always remove your jewelry before sunbathing, swimming
It will save you from any unnecessary tanlines, but the biggest reason to sunbathe without your jewelry is to avoid the dulling effects of sunscreen coating your finery. The harsh chemicals of most pools are also top be avoided, so whenever possible, leave the bling behind, and be sure to clean them regularly when you can’t. A final reason to swim sans jewelry: it’s not uncommon for rings, bracelets and necklaces to slip off the wearer under water. Who wants to spend a relaxing afternoon at the lake worriedly searching for a lost irreplaceable piece?

2. Pack jewelry with care when traveling
Tangled and loose jewelry quickly become damaged. Hard faceted stones, particularly diamonds, are well known for their ability to scratch softer objects, like pearls and metals. Delicate chains can become and develop kinks and destroy links. Always pack pieces in individual soft cloth pouches or lined jewelry boxes to prevent scratching, dulling, and destruction.

3. Keep it safe.
When selecting a hotel, be sure that safe deposit boxes are available. Never leave fine jewelry unattended in a hotel room, a rental car, or on a lounge chair—even if you’re just stepping out for a few minutes.

4. Shopping while on vacation? for something new? Do your research.
Most vacation destinations also feature attractive shopping boutiques, but if you get the urge to commemorate your trip with a fine jewelry purchase (in addition to the inexpensive tourist trinkets), take the time to investigate the retailer’s reputation for quality. It wouldn’t be the first time a tourist was taken by a smiling store owner bearing shiny baubles crafted by “local” artisans. Before you make a new investment, invest some time to check out the shop. How long have they been in business? If you’re in the US, check their rating with the BBB, and also learn the store’s return policy. Most reputable jewelers have at least a 30-day money back guarantee wherever you are.

5. Before you go away, be sure your jewelry is adequately insured.
If you decide to bring an especially valuable piece on vacation—perhaps your engagement ring, a pricey watch, or a family heirloom, check with your insurance agent to obtain an independent appraisal report to ensure a fair replacement if the article is lost, stolen or damaged. You will need to plan time to photograph and catalog all valuables prior to departing on your trip.

Just as your precious pieces can become lost while swimming, the same caution extends to wearing fine jewelry during any strenuous activity, from hiking to volleyball to gardening. As the saying goes, better safe than sorry! The best thing you can do to protect and extend the life of your jewelry year-round is to have it professionally cleaned on a regular basis. As a full service Nashville jewelry store, we also provide special services like jewelry cleaning, custom jewelry engraving, and watch repair. Our goal is lifetime service for lifetime customers.
