How to Care for Platinum Jewelry

Today many people are opting for platinum bands on wedding rings over the more standard gold or silver. Not only is it a truly impressive looking metal, but it’s also very durable and will last several lifetimes if cared for properly. Here’s a quick guide on how to keep your rings, earrings, necklaces and other platinum pieces looking like new. Read it completely and follow the steps on a regular basis to ensure that every set of jewelry you own stays in pristine condition.

Wash Away Impurities

Submerge the pieces into a mixture of mild soap and water, or a specialized jewelry cleaner and gently wipe using a lint-free cloth to remove any impurities on the jewelry. This is excellent for getting rid of oils and other stains that develop over time.

Gently Scrub

Take a soft-bristled toothbrush and slowly go over all sections of the jewelry to remove anything that’s still stuck on after the initial washing. Don’t hurry through this process, and be sure to use very gentle pressure to avoid doing any damage to the jewelry.

Rinse it Off

Now that the pieces are nice and clean, it’s time to rinse away any of the soap using warm running water. Be careful to keep your jewelry away from sink drains, and consider putting in a basket or other protective drain stopper to avoid losing your precious pieces.

Dry and Store

Finally finish cleaning your rings, necklaces, earrings and other pieces by wiping them down with a lint-free cloth. Wipe them gently and then store them in a protective box section, or a jewelry bag alone to avoid any scratching. Ensure that every piece is individually wrapped or separated, so that you don’t have them rubbing on one another.

Platinum is a beautiful metal that holds up really well over time, but relying on these techniques will ensure that it continues to look its best over the years. It only takes a few minutes to wash up your jewelry, and if you are careful to maintain it, you shouldn’t have any problems in the future.
